"The coffee is so smooth and round, like a grown-up childhood favorite. You can even get a very decent decaf - I have had mine remade by the coffee dude before cause he thought it came out too slowly and would probably taste bad. Quality! Never ventured much further into food territory until recently with a toasted eggplant turkish bread thingo and it had been cooked twice- once in the oven to melt the cheese and once to toast the top. Now that is love of food!" By Joyti, URBANSPOON

"This is a great place to sit back with a cup of coffee and people watch the day away. While you're at it you might as well indulge in some French toast with real Canadian maple syrup because the locals here can be quite entertaining, so you'll need to keep your energy levels up. Interestingly, Café Lua doesn't blare music videos or daytime television on their TV set. Instead, they show slides of art from local artists. ...And, if you happen to feel a little artistic during your visit at Café Lua, then simply make your way to the toilets. No, this isn't going where you think it is. Lua have thoughtfully provided some markers for you in the bathrooms, so you can do a doodle while you, um, do a doody." By Miriam, YELP
"In keeping with Elgin Street's theme of somewhat daggy but quality eating establishments, Café Lua is a great spot for a quite breakfast away from Lygon's tourist bustle. "While mulling over the endless possibilities I noticed the service was fast and polite, although there are no real 'standout personalities' ... The menu is as colourful as the Zimbabwean flag, and after about three hours of complaining because I couldn't choose between two outstanding looking dishes, I finally ended up on the Corn Cake Stack, a concoction including all things perfect in this world. Keeping in mind it was a long weekend, a Sunday, and the café was near-on bursting at the seams, the dishes were delivered rather swiftly (within 20 minutes), and waiting time was punctured by waitresses asking if we needed more coffee/water (yes and yes)." "In an area famous for its hard-hitting Italian cuisine, the understated Cafe Lua's extensive and eclectic menu is a refreshing antidote on a block stretched thin for choices other than pizza or pasta.
"This friendly neighbourhood gem on the corner of Elgin and Drummond Streets in Carlton serves locals and not-so-locals, delivering breakfast and lunch to happy customers and friends seven days a week. The menu runs through favourites including quinoa porridge, avocado on toast with camomile salt and Mexican-style scrambled eggs, made with the perfect amount of chipotle sauce. Over half the menu is available as a gluten-free option (including delicately-spiced pumpkin and chia seed pancakes) and Lua also has a range of hearty vegetarian choices. There's a rotating specials board featuring dishes created with fresh and seasonal ingredients. This might be a pork belly and white bean hot pot, a succulent steak sandwich, or the hard to go past banana and butterscotch pancakes, served with a generous topping of pecans. The almond milk, strawberry and mango smoothie topped with basil is one of the best hangover cures in town (trust us) and for the more traditional, there are nine different flavours of milkshakes to try, all served in big silver canisters with an extra glass on the side. The bright space is adorned with artwork and photography by local artists and a digital screen scrolls through one-off pieces for sale. Fresh flowers sit on the tables, making it feel a little bit like your mum's kitchen (if your mum is a really, really good chef) and there's also a big pile of blankets by the door for those willing to brave the chill outside. "Somehow, without us really noticing, the cafe on the corner of Elgin and Drummond Streets in Carlton has transformed itself from one of Carlton's many uninspiring eateries to a friendly cafe with a brilliant menu and excellent coffee. Welcome Cafe Lua! I think they've been going for a while but it was only recently that I bothered to read the menu on my way past. Cindy and I stopped in on a Thursday morning to find them doing a brisk trade in both takeaway coffees and late-starting breakfasters like us."
"...Cafe Lua has become our go-to option when we want to grab a quick, local breakfast. The menu is extensive and interesting enough to keep us from getting bored, the staff are always lovely and the cafe itself is stylish and spacious. This time around, Cindy and I both hit up eggy options - I had the corn cake stack with avocado, roast tomato, mushrooms (instead of the standard bacon), coriander pesto and a poached egg ($16). The corn cake had a nicely fried exterior and was filled with crunchy corn kernels and capsicum pieces - it was an excellent base for the pesto, poached egg and perfect half-avocado to be mushed together on top of. I even ate half the tomato before palming the rest off on Cindy. ... The word is evidently getting out there about Cafe Lua - by the time we left they were packed to the rafters, with a steady stream of people dropping in for takeaway coffee. It's great to see an unpretentious and consistent cafe like this becoming a success - let's just hope we don't end up having to queue for a table."

"Carlton never had to try hard to keep its coffee capital mantle, except maybe the last few years. My sense was that it was losing it's lustre and maybe was only the place for tourists. I stand corrected, Cafe Lua is a lovely, quiet and authentic coffee house offering great coffee. Angus the owner is on the tools, clearly relaxed as he pours the next coffee in his sarong (I feel like I am in Thailand. Clearly a favourite with the studious pupils from Melbourne Uni. There seems to be a frenzy of reading going on as the dark nectar flows. I like this place; Authentic, comfortable and welcoming."

Right on the leafy side corner of Drummond Street and Elgin Street, it's perfect for sitting outside in the sun while you indulge in pumpkin and chia seed pancakes, 'Naughty' French toast with Canadian maple syrup and crispy bacon, quinoa porridge with all the healthy trimmings, or an old-school toastie - filled with your choice of baked beans, sardines, spaghetti or ye olde fave ham, cheese and tomato - cooked in a jaffle maker. WEEKEND NOTES BY by Su Mei Koh 31/08/ 2012 http://www.weekendnotes.com/cafe-lua/
"Did you know that the word 'Lua' (pronounced loo-ah) means 'Moon' in Portuguese? Well, neither did I, until I looked it up that is. But the eccentric name of this cafe aside, I was also intrigued by how it sits confidently on the quieter corner of Elgin and Drummond St in Carlton, with bright green awnings and colorful chairs outside that seem to beckon you over to come sit down and have a coffee. And that was precisely what I did."
"The interior of the café is refreshing and bright, with a quirky hint of personalization with Polaroid photos tacked up on the wall behind the service counter. The tables are well spread out, with ample room to move; the big bay-like windows surrounding the café also allow you to take in the adjacent views while sipping on a cup of hot coffee or enjoying a nice breakfast. Regardless of whether you're popping by for a quiet brunch without the crowds, or if you're accompanied by a cohort of family and friends and the place is packed, the atmosphere at café Lua is one that is always welcoming and friendly."
"The question on everyone's mind when visiting a new brunch place is usually 'what's the menu like'? or 'do they serve decent coffee'? Well, the answers to those questions are 'great' and 'yes they do'. The menu has an eclectic variety of traditional delights, which include signature dishes such as the Huevos Rancheros, which is chipotle and feta scrambled eggs on home-made corn tortilla with spicy chorizo, tomato and coriander salsa with dressed rocket (wow, that was a mouthful, literally), as well as pumpkin and chia seed pancakes topped with yoghurt, lentil and spinach salad. There are plenty of gluten-free choices as well, which caters to the needs of a more niche group of customers. Whichever option you go for on the menu, it is unlikely that you will be disappointed."

"... Anyway, after a little more research I failed to find anything that indicated Mexican as the root of Café Lua, leaving me to think they are simply a delicious, innovative café that has been able to fashion one of their breakfast dishes into some kind of spicy Mexican fiesta."
"I rocked up to the café and quietly expected the same kind of café layout I have received on various occasions in this area of town. Quirky, eclectic, bric-a-brac style fit out, non-matching crockery, wobbly tables and good food that would choose not to be your friend if it were a person. After conceding that it wasn't Mexican, I was then in the mood for a rich cultural adventure, so instantly tried to pinpoint the foundations of this place. Coffee bags hung on the wall equals 'could be Colombian'. Unusual earthy music equals 'perhaps African'. Independent art all over the place...well, this could be from anywhere, really. While mulling over the endless possibilities I noticed the service was fast and polite, although there are no real 'standout personalities' (like at Piccante). In all fairness it was the Sunday of a long weekend and these poor peeps were probably pissed off that they had to work, and fair enough really. They were much friendlier than I could ever be in these circumstances, so three cheers to them. In order to help ease their burden I ordered seven types of coffee and then complained about each of them for different reasons, including claiming that one of them was in fact a form of Siberian tea. The menu is as colourful as the Zimbabwean flag, and after about three hours of complaining because I couldn't choose between two outstanding looking dishes, I finally ended up on the Corn Cake Stack, a concoction including all things perfect in this world. Keeping in mind it was a long weekend, a Sunday, and the café was near-on bursting at the seams, the dishes were delivered rather swiftly (within 20 minutes), and waiting time was punctured by waitresses asking if we needed more coffee/water (yes and yes). To be honest, I can't fault the meal choice. A solid effort that hit almost all the marks with flavour, colour and aroma. I was able to overlook the egg being about one minute overcooked because the corn cake was so incredibly tasty. The corn kernels were fresh and juicy and tiny, tasty cubes of capsicum were littered throughout. The bacon was spot on, and the coriander pesto tasted very much like someone's mum had made it for a sick friend (as in you could taste the love and care stirred through). The chef was clever enough to slightly dry out the roasted tomato so when it was put on top of the corn cake it didn't make it all soggy and gross, something I wish all tomatoes would do. But they won't because most of them are selfish jerks. The ambiance wasn't quite as warm and welcoming as the food, but it's still a comfortable place to chow down, and offers a wonderfully colourful menu. They also have many gluten free options so those of you who swell up like a water balloon after eating bread should really check this place out. Also, those of you who like rad food should also pop in. Because it's rad, obviously."

"10 June 2011, Hope M Hurray for toasties and milkshakes!! Café Lua know how to please my sentimental stomach, and the fair trade coffee is pretty awesome too. In keeping with Elgin Street's theme of somewhat daggy but quality eating establishments, Café Lua is a great spot for a quite breakfast away from Lygon's tourist bustle. At the bar along the window you'll find the latest magazines to flick through (very handy now that Borders is gone - I was worried I'd have to start actually buying Vogue), and the outdoor tables are a good for sunning yourself and patting other people's dogs. I'm not a fan of giant flat screen TVs in any context other than a sports bar, so Lua do loose a few points for the eyesore on the wall (although in their defense they use it to promote the work of local artists). Still, I suppose it's better than having to look at your loved ones after a big night. But back to the toasties. The ham, cheese and tomato comes with a touch of mustard (what a revelation!) and, when paired with a chocolate milkshake, it's sure to transport you back to a time when you had scabs on your knees and Mariah Carey in your discman. Who knew memory lane was so tasty?"

"All of us born and bred Melbournians know for a fact that Lygon street isn't the place or one of the only places for a good authentic Italian meal. If any outsider came to me for advice id have to say guisseppe arnaldo and sons at crown casino. Now im just rambling further from the main point of this post. On the weekend my family and I went to a café in carlton on the corner of Elgin and Rathdowne street called café lua. This favoured café seems to always be abundant of happy customers with satisfied tummies. On the menu, it had a contemporary flare and they aren't afraid to get random flavours to 'get to know eachother' like the smoothie I ordered which was a combustion of mango, strawberries, basil and almond milk. Admitingly I knew it was going to taste amazing - the last sweet basil experience I had was a basil flavoured ice cream which is probably now my most favoured, unforgettable flavours. For my main I ordered a spinach salad with hazelnuts, pomegranate, pearl barley, beetroot and goats cheese. I'm not going to reveal the rest of the menu because you'll just have to go there and snoop it out yourself. Prices are fairly moderate so no need to fuss about that. They have an enthusiasm for art and culture and promote local art events regularly as well. I think there's one on this Friday but they've got the details there so check it out!"

"Before Cafe Lua, the cafe on the corner of Elgin and Drummond streets in Carlton looked dingy and unappealing. It's now bright, colourful and appealing. Having read Where's the beef's positive review, I was keen to try it. I ordered the corn hotcakes with bacon, tomato, avocado and poached egg. It's a substantial meal and a delicious one, with the coriander pesto working particularly well with the bacon. With the unfortunate closure of What about food cafe further west on Elgin St, Cafe Lua is a welcome addition to the area. The coffee is good, the service friendly and the cafe is spacious and comfortable."

"Let me start with a few observations. The ambience is bright and welcoming. Lots of retro laminex tables, old kitchen cannisters and hessian bags on the walls as well as a space for art work. While they have plenty of vegetarian dishes, it seems unusual that they have gluten free dishes marked on the menu but not vegetarian or vegan. Parking is a nightmare around this place unless you go to the Lygon Court carpark. The service is pleasant.
"There is not much space for a pram but I noticed a neighbouring table had a highchair at our recent visit. I have visited a couple of times when it was really busy and once when it was fairly quiet. When quiet there was enough room for Sylvia to run about. When busy, we serendipitously had a stack of golden books and a wee rabbit on our table to keep Sylvia amused. On both visits Sylvia has been pleased with some a very nice fruit bread with cheese on the side."
"My first visit was on a work lunchtime (after seeing Cindy and Michael write about it). I have written about it here but I thought I would mention it again to help you keep up. I had a pumpkin chia pancake. It didn't live up to my expectations but still delighted me that they would experiment with chia in this way. The yoghurt lentil and spinach salad was too creamy for me but, again, an interesting savoury offering. I was interested at a smoothie with hazelnut milk and basil - as well as regular banana and strawberry. It was quite floral, which I assume is the basil asserting itself. My main problem though is that I make smoothies with lots of fruit and always find them too milky when eating out."
"The second time was a visit with E and Sylvia (and dolly). I really really wanted to try the pancakes with banana, pecans and caramel sauce. So I chose a spinach and feta savoury pastry. Quite nice and crispy on the outside once I had sent it back due to a cold middle. The pancakes were the main event. As seems to be the way they cook pancakes at Cafe Lua, they were soft rather than fluffy (and I think they were gluten free). The bananas were a bit ripe for me and the pecans were not quite right but the caramel sauce was fantastic. I could have just eating the pancakes and sauce and been very happy!"
"Most recently I really wanted to try the corn cakes but I was told that they would not change dishes when it was busy. I was surprised. Not eating meat and disliking eggs, means that I often ask for changes in breakfast dishes. Most places are fine with that. E eats everything. He chose the corn cakes so at least I could taste a corner. They come with bacon, poached egg, avocado, roasted tomatoes and coriander. He raved about it. The corn cakes were nice, though quite soft inside. E also ordered some hash browns on the side to share. (I don't usually include meat photos but I wanted a photo of the corn cakes.)"
"Instead of the corn cakes I ordered the smashed avocado on sourdough with feta and lemon. I also ordered some tomato on the side. It was lovely. The feta seemed a bit strong after eating almond feta at home but there was heaps of creamy avocado and the lemon finished it off nicely. I would have loved it even more if not feeling a bit disappointed about not having my first choice. After our meal, E and I were talking about what else we might order from the menu. I want to try the home made baked beans with some of the side dishes. He might try the big brekky. Sylvia will probably have the fruit bread and cheese. Though she might prefer some of the caramel pecan bars that she was eyeballing as I paid the bill. No doubt we will enjoy more visits there."

"So, I ordered the 'Lua Atlantic': tea-smoked Atlantic salmon on multi-grain toast with eggs benedict and sesame spinach, topped with caperberries'. One word, WOWZA. The Hollandaise sauce!! Guuurrrrrl, i'onnt know how you do it, but I was in eggs-benedict-heaven! The only fault was that the multi-grain toast was waay too toasted and made it unbelievably hard to eat (physically toast-hard). But luckily for that damn Hollandaise magic and it cancelled out any wahs I had with my meal. And it was the perfect size, serving wasn't too big or too small, I'd say it was worth my $16! The orange juice I ordered with my breakfast was very sugary, no complaints from me there, that's how I like it. But we grabbed a coffee on our way out and let's just say .. I'm just in it for the H-sauce."

Definitely going back. best coffee by Jyoti (3 reviews) OK, so at first glance this place is nothing so special looking, but I have tried a few coffees around Carlton, and I have to keep coming back here. The coffee is so smooth and round, like a grown-up childhood favorite. You can even get a very decent decaf- I have had mine remade by the coffee dude before cause he thought it came out too slowly and would probably taste bad. Quality! Never ventured much further into food territory until recently with a toasted eggplant turkish bread thingo and it had been cooked twice- once in the oven to melt the cheese and once to toast the top. Now that is love of food! And could I taste the difference? Yes. The toasting and the balsamic mayo. And now I am hamstrung. How often will I ration myself such a treat?"
