Bill Perkins run at CHOKER Cup glory came crashing down last night, the highstakes poker player losing 3-0 to Canadian Alexandra Botez in their semi-final match...

By: Andrew Burnett

Having dramatically defeated Matty Staples复古传奇sf in the previous round, Perkins was facing a severe test against Botez in the mixed mindsport game that combines elements of both poker and chess.

The 24-year old chess streamer had already whitewashed Choker Cup wildcard Alessio Gallucci复古传奇sf in her first round battle, and was clearly looking forward to her next match-up.

It’s rare for Perkins to be lost for words, but the pre-match psychological edge went Botez’s way…

…as did the first match of their best of 5 encounter, the victor looking at a final match-up with Canadian International Master Eric Rosen – with a battle with CHOKER endboss Hikaru Nakamura复古传奇sf the ultimate goal.

复古传奇sf Before we get into the action, if you’re not sure of the rules here’s a quick rundown…

  • Players are dealt 5 cards each, from a 44-card pack, with a chess piece on each card
  • The betting rounds occur after 2, 4 and 5 cards are dealt.
  • Once the betting rounds are completed (if neither you nor your opponent has folded) you place the chess pieces you have been dealt in specially-marked zones.
  • After that, it’s a traditional chess game, the winner taking down the pot, checkmate – or CHOKEMATE! – the ultimate goal, though not the only way to win.

Perkins had his chances, a material, positional and time advantage in the game seen below…

复古传奇sf …but the multi-millionaire playing from his yacht in the Caribbean failed to find the winning combination (solution at end of article for those who want to try it themselves) and eventually lost on time to fall 1-0 behind.

The next game saw a similar situation, the duo all-in and Perkins again ahead on material, although Botez had an ‘instant soup’ attack. Perkins initially played it very well, but in the position below he blundered horribly with Rb1-b3??…

That allowed Botez to win back the queen, and more, and Perkins was suddenly in the same position he found himself against Matt Staples, 2-0 down and in dire straits.

His hopes of another amazing comeback faded when he rather astoundingly folded when facing an all-in, but it left him with almost no chips and he then drew the worse hand.

复古传奇sf We’ll spare Bill reliving the details of his final stand, but you can watch the denouement, and the rest of the exciting match, below:

So, another 3-0 victory for Botez复古传奇sf and she meets chess IM Eric Rosen in next week’s final to determine the opponent for 5-times US champ and poker fanatic Hikaru Nakamura in the ultimate CHOKER Cup showdown.
